In 1973, a motley group of young writers, artists, political activists, and recent college graduates purchased over 80 acres of land outside West Danby, New York to build, with their own hands, a two story home that became Lavender Hill

Funded, in part, by the Cornell Council for the Arts, “Lavender Hill: A Love Story” uses rare archival 8mm film and interviews with former commune members and gay and lesbian activists and historians to tell the story of the origins and history of one of the few gay and lesbian communes.

“Austin and Bob’s film is perfect for our theme about the 45th anniversary of Stonewall. Gay communes were an important part of our later advancements for LGBT rights. Even I got my feet wet living at the Unicorn News Gay Commune in DC during the early 70’s, along with Dancing Bear, Andy Kupcake, Ellen Strawberry and Michael Bumblebee.”, said John Scagliotti, Pride of the Ocean’s Program Director.

Austin graduated from Yale and The Iowa Writers’ Workshop and is now an assistant professor in Cornell University’s department of Performing and Media Arts.
