Saving Our History

with “Brother Outsider”

buttonCo-director Bennett Singer will lead a seminar on the importance of finding, saving, and incorporating archival material into film and film archives, using the making of the film he co-directed with Nancy Kates, “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin” as a real-world example of saving African American LGBT history. The seminar will appropriately be taking place on Pride of the Ocean’s, “Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall: Films That Made a Difference” cruise June 1-8, 2014 from New York to Bermuda, “Brother Outsider” being a film that made and continues to make a difference.

Long before Martin Luther King, Jr. became a national figure, Bayard Rustin routinely put his body and his life on the line as a crusader for racial justice.  He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s; as a result, he was frequently shunned by the very civil rights movement he helped create.

Brother Outsider

Though he had to overcome the stereotypes associated with being an illegitimate son, an African American, a gay man and a one-time member of the Communist Party, Rustin the ultimate outsider eventually became a public figure and respected political insider. He not only shaped civil rights movement strategy as a longtime advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., but was known and respected by numerous U.S. Presidents and foreign leaders.

Your joining this cruise helps support filmmakers maintain their work by creating works that save LGBT history, including the precious archival materials that make up our  LGBT African American experience. Click here to book your cabin on Pride of the Ocean.

Vic Basile, Executive Producer of the film, “After Stonewall” and co-founder of the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, will be awarded in a ceremony on Pride of the Ocean’s 5th cruise from New York to Bermuda on June 1-8, 2014. He will be Pride of the Ocean’s 3rd Body of Work Award recipient. “Vic is the perfect choice for our film festival taking place on the 45th anniversary of Stonewall.” said John Scagliotti, Pride of the Ocean’s Program Director, “Certainly with our theme of ‘Films That Made a Difference’, Vic has made a difference in the world through his film work.”

Besides being a major influence in film, Vic is also being recognized for his many years as a pioneering LGBT activist. He became the first Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign Fund in 1983 and subsequently co-founded the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, the largest US LGBT political action committee. There are now more than 700 LGBT elected officials in the United States, largely thanks in part to the efforts of the Victory Fund.

Vic’s work in film and television also includes his role as Executive Producer of “Stonewall 25: Global Voices of Pride and Protest” an hour-long television special produced for the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Vic was also instrumental in saving the “In The Life” Public Television series back in 1994 by single handedly bringing the show back into solvency, allowing it to continue for 17 more years on PBS.

Under President Obama, Vic became Counselor to openly gay Director of the Office of Personnel Management, John Berry, and was responsible for overseeing the implementation of LGBT reforms across the Federal Government.

Bishop Gene Robinson to Lead Panel Exploring LGBT Spirituality & Activism

New York to Bermuda June 1-8, 2014

Gene-Robinson-Norwegian-Breakaway-Exterior-WordPressThe Right Reverend Gene Robinson, recently retired Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, is widely known as the first priest in an openly gay relationship to be consecrated a bishop in a major Christian denomination. His consecration paved the way for acceptance of other LGBT clergy in the Episcopal Church, but not without its share of controversy and conflict, including threats on his life and threats to the unity of the Episcopal church.

Robinson will be joining us aboard The Norwegian Breakaway from New York to Bermuda on June 1-8, 2014 with Pride of the Ocean’s 5th anniversary cruise, entitled, “Selma, Seneca Falls, and Stonewall: Films That Made a Difference” which will explore changes in politics, sports, and spirituality from the Stonewall riots to the times we live in. The cruise sails in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

For The Bible Tells Me SoStarting off our programming on spirituality will be a screening of Daniel Karslake’s film, “For the Bible Tells Me So” which profiles Bishop Gene Robinson as one of its subjects. Bishop Robinson will subsequently be leading a panel discussion entitled, “LGBT Spirituality & Activism Since Stonewall: How have different faith traditions depicted on film and in reality helped or hindered LGBT acceptance since 1969?” Invited to join Robinson on the panel discussion is Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, named one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America by Newsweek for six years (2007-2012).

One of the most important missions of Pride of the Ocean is to increase visibility of the LGBT community. For this reason, the film festival is hosted aboard ships with a diverse group of passengers, in order to put out a positive, constructive, example of the LGBT community to society at large. As part of that mission, Pride of the Ocean will be making a charitable donation of $75 to Episcopal Response to AIDS and offering a cabin discount of $75 for each person reserving a cabin  with the promotional code of GENE14.

Episcopal Response to AIDS is an independent 501(c)(3) organization, whose mission is to support, foster and financially enable HIV/AIDS ministries affiliated with Episcopal faith communities in the Greater New York area. From its inception in 2006 through 2012, Episcopal Response to AIDS has awarded approximately $150,000 in 45 grants to 24 grassroots HIV/AIDS ministries in the Dioceses of Long Island, Newark and New York.

As part of their holiday message, Episcopal Response to AIDS announced 2013 grants to 4 HIV/AIDS charitable organizations in the New York metropolitan area, including St. Luke in the Fields, Angel Food East, [click to read full story]

Pride of the Ocean Continues To Grow. In 2014 Two Distinct Film Festival Cruises and one Sampler.

Cruising to The Bahamas, Bermuda and Around the Hawaiian Islands… Commemorating the 45th anniversary of Stonewall.

Greg-Louganis-Press-Conference-Thumb

Greg Louganis

At our 4th cruise embarkation press conference in Seattle, Greg Louganis, star of the film BACK ON BOARD and Cruise Director James Pollin announced our expansion of Pride of the Ocean for 2014, a year in which we will be commemorating the 45th anniversary of Stonewall. Pollin and his programming partner, Emmy Award-winning Producer, John Scagliotti are putting together two new film festival cruises and one Sampler Weekend cruise (a taste of Pride of the Ocean). The two festival cruises will mark important dates in the LGBT calendar.

The first festival cruise will be sailing out of New York City, where 45 years ago in June 1969, the Stonewall Rebellion began. Programmer John Scagliotti, taking a cue from the 2012 inaugural address of President Obama, has created a Pride theme for the occasion, based on Obama’s stirring remembrance of “Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall.” The films chosen will reflect on the many changes since Stonewall on politics, history, religion and America’s second religion, sports. Included will be the screening of AFTER STONEWALL, which first aired nationally on PBS for the 30th anniversary of Stonewall. That documentary is the recipient of many honors including Los Angeles’s OUTFEST Audience Award. The ship chosen for this Pride filled festival is the new Norwegian Breakaway, which pays tribute itself to New York City and will embark from Manhattan on June 1st for a cruise to Bermuda and back on June 8th. Besides the opening and closing cocktail parties, the group will also enjoy a centerpiece event performance by Vancouver’s “Ryan and Amy Show.” Program Director Scagliotti is reviewing films now and remarked, “ I have been involved with LGBT media since Stonewall, so this Pride of the Ocean festival is an opportunity to showcase some films that have made a difference in the struggle for LGBT freedoms that we now enjoy.”

Then in October, Pride of the Ocean goes to Hawaii for a cruise that sails on National Coming Out Day, October 11, 2014, cruising to five Hawaiian islands on board the Norwegian Pride of America, returning to Honolulu on October 18th . The theme will be Asian/Pacific LGBT films. Included in this cruise will be a Bon Voyage Luau that will make for a joyous Coming Out Day where Pride of the Ocean passengers will get “leid.”

Children of God

And Pride of the Ocean recognizes that many can’t wait for these cruises, so it has added to its schedule, a Sampler at the end of the first month of 2014. On this weekend cruise out of Miami to Nassau, passengers will get a “taste of Pride of the Ocean.” Since the ship is heading for The Bahamas, Pride of the Ocean will screen Bahamian film director Kareem Mortimer’s sensational film, CHILDREN Of GOD. There will be a cocktail party and panel of funny shorts included on this Pride of the Ocean Sampler. The dates are January 31, out of Miami, and returning to Florida on Feb 3rd.

Pride of the Ocean Doubles in Size for 2013

The fourth Pride of the Ocean LGBT Film Festival sails for Glacier Bay, Alaska, in August with over twice as many passengers as the preceding third cruise. On board the Norwegian Pearl luxury cruise ship, the film festival will host groundbreaking film screenings, seminars, workshops and a wide variety of filmmakers and special guests.

Group MontageOnly a Few Cabins Remain on the only LGBT Film Festival at Sea

Anticipating the leap in size this year, Program Director John Scagliotti and Cruise Director Jim Pollin planned for more cabins to be available for the expanding audience of 2013.

James Pollin“Our cruise has leaped in size every year,” states Pollin, “and this year we knew we would see another burst of interest for our first West Coast departure.”

“We are delighted that our growth even surpassed our expectations.”

As the passenger list expanded, Pollin ensured the group had the space they needed. “Interest has been so high, the railroad car reserved for the group shore excursion in Skagway on the White Pass Railroad sold out. We quickly added another car, and that (more…)

Post-Supreme Court decision on Gay Marriage Discussion On Pride of the Ocean

This very month the Supreme Court of the United States will hear arguments on the future of marriage equality for same-sex couples – an unprecedented step in the forward march of LGBT rights. Married couples and marriage activists from all states can take to the seas while exploring the outcomes with one of the most recognized figures in the fight – activist Michael Crawford of Freedom to Marry, the Washington DC-based nonprofit leading the national campaign.

Michael Crawford

Michael Crawford, from Freedom to Marry

By the time you set sail with us up the Pacific Northwest’s Inside Passage to Glacier Bay, watching our array of ground-breaking films, we will already know the Supreme Court’s conclusions. Decisions are due in June on the vital challenges both to California’s Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriage in that state, and to the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, prohibiting the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage under federal laws.

Your Pride of the Ocean film festival will examine the outcomes of this historic event, through the lens of our artistic medium, by hosting a screening of the multiple award-winning film “I DO” followed by a special discussion led by Crawford.

“I DO” presents the story of a British (more…)
