Be The First…

Dear Friends, Andrea As many of you may already know, our dear friend Andrea Meyerson is currently in post production on her latest documentary, CLAMBAKE. Andrea screened a work in progress unfinished rough cut of CLAMBAKE on Pride of the Ocean’s Western Caribbean Cruise this past March. The film offers an insightful, exciting, and humorous look into the 30-year history of Women’s Week in Provincetown, one of the largest lesbian destinations in the world. We have just found out that the film has been accepted into the prestigious Provincetown International Film Festival where it will have its world premiere! The festival takes place June 17-21, 2015. She is working diligently to complete it by the festival’s deadline, which is quickly approaching. Can’t make it to Provincetown in June? Would you like to support Andrea and her new film? How about Alaska in August? Andrea has graciously agreed to screen the finished CLAMBAKE film on Pride of the Ocean’s Alaska Cruise in August. Alaska has been Pride of the Ocean’s most popular destination to date, with many of Andrea’s WOMEN ON A ROLL members supporting her on the cruise. Andrea will also be joined by comedian Jennie McNulty, who not only appears in the film, but who will be giving an exclusive performance for Pride of the Ocean. As Andrea agrees, this is a tough road — making documentaries about our LGBTQ history and culture, but we feel it’s extremely important to document, preserve and share our important journey. It’s a blessing and a curse — but someone has to do it to ensure our rich LGBT history does not get lost or forgotten, and that generations to come will have a greater understanding and appreciation of the individuals and events that paved the way for them. Cock N’ Bull

Only 7 days left to explore, “What cures heartbreak?” with Nathan Adloff

Nathan Adloff (Director/Co-Writer), perhaps best known for his feature film debut with “Nate & Margaret”, will be screening his latest film, “Cock N’ Bull” on Pride of the Ocean’s 45th anniversary of Stonewall cruise June 1-8, 2014.

Roger Ebert commended “Nate and Margaret” as, “A smart, observant movie about two very particular people, and its casting is pitch-perfect.” The New York Times called the film “Fragile and simple in the best possible way.”

“Cock N’ Bull” has screened in some of the top LGBT Film Festivals, including Outfest, Sidewalk’s SHOUT! and the Reeling Chicago LGBT International Film Festival. Nathan’s experimental film was shot in four hours without a script.

Iris Moore is a Montreal based artist who is focused on painting, drawing and animation. In her animated film “Beyond The Mirror’s Gaze”, she explores the fantastical and surreal, with the intention of evoking the viewer’s sense of whimsy and wonder surrounding themes of gender.

Jared Leto? On Pride of the Ocean, Transgender People Represent Themselves On and Off the Screen

Recently, Jared Leto was awarded the Oscar for his portrayal of the transgender character Rayon in the film, “Dallas Buyers Club”. While some felt that the character was a positive portrayal of a transgender hero, others felt that the portrayal was stereotypical and didn’t accurately represent the diversity found within the transgender community. Pride of the Ocean prides itself on selecting independent, original, and authentic personal stories by and about the LGBT community.

One such story that Pride of the Ocean has been closely following is that of Ewan Duarte, whose personal journey began with his 2010 documentary short, “Spiral Transition” about the filmmaker’s relationship with his mother and how it changes and evolves as he transitions genders.

Ewan’s journey continues in his Master of Fine Arts thesis film, “Change Over Time”, an animated, experimental, personal documentary about the filmmaker’s first year on testosterone, told from an impressionistic and poetic perspective.

Moving into its 5th year, Pride of the Ocean proudly continues its history as a film festival that showcases transgender films and invites filmmakers; however, the one transgender voice that has been missing from Pride of the Ocean has been that of the transgender audience, so if you know a transgender person or are a transgender person yourself, we encourage you to consider joining Ewan and other transgender filmmakers in the safe inclusive space that we have created on Pride of the Ocean by clicking here or on the button below.

Coming Out: A Revolutionary Act

While gays and lesbians in the large LGBT capitals of the world often see coming out as easy and sometimes not even necessary, the recent headlines in the news tell another story. For many people, coming out can be terrifying, dangerous, and even life threatening.
Michael Gorlick, a graduate of Western University’s Media Program, came out to his friends and family on social media, using YouTube and hidden cameras to record the experience as part of his documentary film, while driving cross country from Vancouver to Toronto. Along the way, he shares his thoughts and feelings about coming out when he gets home and how/if he will be able to do so. He reflects on how things will change, if they even will, and his feelings of fear and hope.

In the film, “After Stonewall” Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, remarked,

The most important thing I believe that gays and lesbians have done to change the world is to come out of the closet…that revolutionary act, for me, is the most important thing we’ve done in 30 years.

“Coming Out: A Revolutionary Act in the 21st Century” will have an exclusive screening on Pride of the Ocean’s cruise departing New York on June 1, 2014 in honor of the 45th Anniversary of Stonewall.

A Festival That Looks To The Future

We are so pleased to see that one of our works-in-progress films, REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG, that was in the workshop program on our last Pride of the Ocean cruise in Alaska, will be having its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. Five months ago, our Pride of the Ocean guests watched a sneak peek of the work-in-progress and talked with director Nancy Kates about her film and her creative process.

Saving Our History

with “Brother Outsider”

Co-director Bennett Singer will lead a seminar on the importance of finding, saving, and incorporating archival material into film and film archives, using the making of the film he co-directed with Nancy Kates, “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin” as a real-world example of saving African American LGBT history. The seminar will appropriately be taking place on Pride of the Ocean’s, “Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall: Films That Made a Difference” cruise June 1-8, 2014 from New York to Bermuda, “Brother Outsider” being a film that made and continues to make a difference.

Long before Martin Luther King, Jr. became a national figure, Bayard Rustin routinely put his body and his life on the line as a crusader for racial justice. He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s; as a result, he was frequently shunned by the very civil rights movement he helped create.

Though he had to overcome the stereotypes associated with being an illegitimate son, an African American, a gay man and a one-time member of the Communist Party, Rustin the ultimate outsider eventually became a public figure and respected political insider. He not only shaped civil rights movement strategy as a longtime advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., but was known and respected by numerous U.S. Presidents and foreign leaders.

is an American writer, speaker, and member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Her writing includes themes of class struggle, sexual abuse, child abuse, feminism and lesbianism. Allison’s first novel, the semi-autobiographical Bastard Out of Carolina, was published in 1992 and was one of five finalists for the 1992 National Book Award.
