Surviving The Silence

Continuing Pride of the Ocean’s long and distinguished history of giving its guests the unique opportunity to see  pre-release sneak peeks of feature length films as works in progress before anyone else, we are proud to announce that SURVIVING THE SILENCE, scheduled for completion in the Fall of 2019, will be screening on Pride of the Ocean’s 50th Anniversary of Stonewall Cruise, departing New York for Canada and New England June 8-15, 2019. SURVIVING THE SILENCE joins the distinguished roster of films, such as Cheryl Furjanic’s BACK ON BOARD: GREG LOUGANIS, Nancy Kates’ REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG, & Yoruba Richen’s THE NEW BLACK that have screened as works in progress on Pride of the Ocean, only to go onto successful festival runs and broadcasts on HBO PBS.

In addition to the Director Cindy Abel, and Editor Michael Bruno of the film being on board, 3 of the film’s subjects will also be on board. In the early 1990s, a highly-decorated colonel was forced to expel an Army hero for being a lesbian. What no one knew at the time was that the same colonel was herself in a relationship with a woman.

Cindy Abel & Colonel Margarethe “Grethe” Cammermeyer (Retired)

Decades later, this truth is exposed in all of its complexity, and the three women involved – Col. Patsy Thompson, her wife Barbara Brass, and Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer – come together to contemplate those events and their impact not only in the film, but in person on Pride of the Ocean.

While online sales have ended, there are still cabins available for our 50th Anniversary of Stonewall cruise celebrating LGBT Military Veterans and Veterans of the Stonewall Revolution. We will be honoring Colonel Cammenmeyer for her extraordinary service to the United States of America and her service to the LGBT community at a special cocktail party for our guests, which you are cordially invited to!

You are encouraged to call Geisha Cumberbatch at (703) 389-4617, or email Geisha at g.cumberbatch@cruiseone.com to chat with her about what cabin categories are still available. You might be surprised at how inexpensive a 7-day cruise vacation, inclusive of lodging, meals and transportation, can be, versus the same vacation on land. More about one of our distinguished guests, Colonel Cammermeyer below.

Margarethe “Grethe” Cammermeyer (born March 24, 1942) served as a colonel in the Washington National Guard and became a gay rights activist. Born in Oslo, Norway, she became a United States citizen in 1960. In 1961 she joined the Army Nurse Corps as a student. She received a B.S. in Nursing in 1963 from the University of Maryland. At the University of Washington School of Nursing, she earned a master’s degree in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1991.

She had a 15-year marriage to a man and they had four sons. In 1988, when she was 46, she met the woman who later became her wife, Diane Divelbess.

In 1989, responding to a question during a routine security clearance interview, she disclosed that she is a lesbian. The National Guard began military discharge proceedings against her. On June 11, 1992, she was honorably discharged. Cammermeyer filed a lawsuit against the decision in civil court. In June 1994, Judge Thomas Zilly of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington ruled that her discharge and the ban on gays and lesbians serving in the military were unconstitutional. She returned to the National Guard and served as one of the few openly gay or lesbian people in the U.S. military while the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy was in effect, until her retirement in 1997.

A television movie about Cammermeyer’s story, Serving in Silence, was made in 1995, with Glenn Close starring as Cammermeyer. Its content was largely taken from Cammermeyer’s autobiography of the same name.

After retirement, Cammermeyer ran for the United States Congress in Washington’s 2nd congressional district in 1998. She won the Democratic primary, but lost in the general election to Republican incumbent Jack Metcalf.

In June 2010, she was appointed to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, a committee which is appointed by the United States Secretary of Defense and which reports to the United States Department of Defense.[1]

The Point Foundation announced plans to honor Cammermeyer with its Point Legend Award in April 2011.[2]

In 2012, after same-sex marriage was legalized in Washington state, Cammermeyer and her wife Diane Divelbess became the first same-sex couple to get a license in Island County.

The Stonewall 50 Cruise Welcomes Aboard Outspoken: Oral History from LGBTQ Pioneers

Joining Pride of the Ocean’s Stonewall 50 cruise  is Steven F. Dansky, activist, writer, and photographer for more than fifty years, now a documentary filmmaker, who journeyed from coast-to-coast through rural communities to urban epicenters and across the globe via Skype to Bangkok, Buenos Aires, and Melbourne, to capture the oral history from the founders of the modern LGBTQ movement.

Steven F. Dansky

Inspired from Outspoken: Oral History of LGBTQ Pioneers, the documentary film ‘From Trauma to Activism‘ unpacks LGBTQ history with narratives from audacious pathfinders and gay liberationists; dykes and lesbian separatists; and radical fairies and queens. The documentary features three veterans of the Stonewall Rebellion, Danny Garvin, Jerry Hoose, and Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt. Also, three veterans of the U.S. military: transgender activists Blue Montana and Frankie Perez; and LGBT activist and Nevada State Senator, Pat Spearman.

These pioneers formulated daring politics with insights about human existence, trans and gender identity and sexual orientation that inspired generations of post-Stonewall Rebellion activists, change-agents,  academicshistoriansartists, filmmakers and writers.

Many Outspoken narratives contain contemplative views about the future for LGBTQ people. Advances toward basic human rights have taken place, such as marriage equality in a handful of states, but these are very recent victories. It was only in 2003 that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned anti-sodomy laws. Globally, the fate of LGBTQ people is more dubious with recent anti-homosexual legislation enacted in countries on several continents, often exported from the U.S. by homophobic evangelical Christian churches.

Join Pride of the Ocean’s Stonewall 50 cruise to learn and celebrate how our Stonewall Pioneers fought for and won the LGBT rights that we have today and how you can help to safeguard those rights for future generations by remembering the lessons learned from the past on this 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

Be The First…

LetterToAnitaScreeningDear Friends, AndreaAs many of you may already know, our dear friend Andrea Meyerson is currently in post production on her latest documentary, CLAMBAKE. Andrea screened a work in progress unfinished rough cut of CLAMBAKE on Pride of the Ocean’s Western Caribbean Cruise this past March. The film offers an insightful, exciting, and humorous look into the 30-year history of Women’s Week in Provincetown, one of the largest lesbian destinations in the world. We have just found out that the film has been accepted into the prestigious Provincetown International Film Festival where it will have its world premiere! The festival takes place June 17-21, 2015. She is working diligently to complete it by the festival’s deadline, which is quickly approaching. woarheader Can’t make it to Provincetown in June? Would you like to support Andrea and her new film? How about Alaska in August? Andrea has graciously agreed to screen the finished CLAMBAKE film on Pride of the Ocean’s Alaska Cruise in August. Alaska has been Pride of the Ocean’s most popular destination to date, with many of Andrea’s WOMEN ON A ROLL members supporting her on the cruise. Andrea will also be joined by comedian Jennie McNulty, who not only appears in the film, but who will be giving an exclusive performance for Pride of the Ocean. As Andrea agrees, this is a tough road — making documentaries about our LGBTQ history and culture, but we feel it’s extremely important to document, preserve and share our important journey. It’s a blessing and a curse — but someone has to do it to ensure our rich LGBT history does not get lost or forgotten, and that generations to come will have a greater understanding and appreciation of the individuals and events that paved the way for them. Passionate to address complex scientific and social issues that are often overlooked by the mainstream media, Dean turned to documentary filmmaking with his partner, Joe Wilson. Their first feature film was the critically acclaimed, Out in the Silence in 2005, and their current feature film about the indigenous people and customs of Hawaii, Kumu Hina, is screening all over the world, including on Pride of the Ocean’s 2014 Hawaiian Islands Cruise, where Dean screened the film with Joe (both pictured above. Pride of the Ocean Lives Out Loud

Adding to the Sports and International programs of Pride of the Ocean’s Western Caribbean cruise is our Live Out Loud program, which tells a tapestry of stories, both documentary and fiction, both gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered, of people making the choice to live life to its fullest, sometimes under adverse circumstances.

Leading off the program is a delightful short film where a surprise visit, a bumbling bestie, and many years of tight-lipped deception cause EVERYONE’S ish to hit the fan. The chaos caused in this comedy of errors is full of sexy moments and tons of laughter. Secrets and Toys will warm your heart as you root for the lovers to make it through the storm.
DalilaAliRajah-SecretsAndToys_640x360ii
Starring Dalila Ali Rajah (Cherry Bomb, Grey’s Anatomy, New Girl), Shelli Boone (Saints and Sinners, Entourage), Diane Sellers (Rules of Engagement, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc, Hot Guys with Guns), Doug Spearman (Noah’s Arc, Old Dogs & New Tricks), Jill Bennett (Second Shot, Dante’s Cove), Marc Samuel (General Hospital, Hot Guys with Guns), and Jason Stuart (Big Gay Love, Coffee Date).

CynthiaLubow-MaculineAndPregnant_640x360i

In Cynthia Lubow’s latest film, Masculine and Pregnant: Transcending Gender, a diverse group of masculine-of-center identified people speak to their experiences of gender expression, gender identity, attractions, parents, partners, pregnancy, breastfeeding, conflicts, parenting and hopes for the future through the lens of carrying a baby in their bodies. The film seeks to confront many assumptions about gender that limit understanding of gender, such as the assumption that there are only two genders, that only men have facial hair, that non-binary gender implies anything about sexual preference, that gender is static, that body shape determines gender, and that male identity and pregnancy are incompatible or incomprehensible.

MichelleWood_AndCounting_640x360

“What would you do if you expected to die?”, Michelle Wood asks us. Taking you on a sensory odyssey, “AND COUNTING” invites you to hear and visualize one man’s journey of living longer than he ever imagined possible with HIV.

We’d love to have you join us for Pride of the Ocean’s Live Out Loud program, and while on-line registration for this cruise has ended, cabins may still be available.

For available options, please call Geisha Cumberbatch at (703) 389-4617, or email Geisha at g.cumberbatch@cruiseone.com.

The Agony and Ecstasy: Sports & Films with an LGBT Arm Twist

Published Author and Filmmaker Added to Cruise Lineup

It’s hard to find females in leading roles as athletes, coaches and owners in sports film story lines. With an abundance of male-focused stories, Hollywood continues to reinforce the association of athleticism with masculinity. Viridiana Lieberman will be joining a panel discussion entitled, “The Agony and Ecstasy: Sports & Films with an LGBT Arm Twist”on Pride of the Ocean’s sports themed Western Caribbean cruise, from March 14-21, 2015.  The panel discussion will be moderated by Cheryl Furjanic, director of the recently released documentary film, “Back on Board: The Greg Louganis Story“.

In her 2014 book, “Sports Heroines on Film: A Critical Study of Cinematic Women Athletes, Coaches and Owners” Viridiana Lieberman, a former Pride of the Ocean filmmaker, discusses sports film heroines, beginning with National Velvet (1944) and ending with Secretariat (2010). Her book addresses the question of whether these story lines do or do not empower women as characters and role models, while offering alternative cinematic choices that reflect the true and ever-growing history of women in sports.
