Coming To Pride of the Ocean

Dean Hamer is an American geneticist, author, and filmmaker. He is best known for his research on the genetics of human behavior, especially sexual orientation, and his critically acclaimed books and documentaries, such as his book The Science of Desire: The Search for the Gay Gene and the Biology of Behavior written over 20 years ago.

Entitled Nature versus Nurture, Pride of the Ocean will be hosting Dean’s talk aboard the Celebrity Solstice® as we cruise up Alaska’s famous Inside Passage, surrounded by the spectacular glaciers, mountains, and fjords of the Inuit, indigenous people of Alaska.

Passionate to address complex scientific and social issues that are often overlooked by the mainstream media, Dean turned to documentary filmmaking with his partner, Joe Wilson. Their first feature film was the critically acclaimed, Out in the Silence in 2005, and their current feature film about the indigenous people and customs of Hawaii, Kumu Hina, is screening all over the world, including on Pride of the Ocean’s 2014 Hawaiian Islands Cruise, where Dean screened the film with Joe (both pictured above. Dean will also be screening some rarely seen earlier work that he and Joe produced together, as well as discussing his journey from the world of genetics to the world of filmmaking, and what he finds rewarding about both.
