Codependent-Cover-640x360 MadeleineOlnekGlamHeadshot320x240

On the very first Pride of the Ocean cruise, Madeleine Olnek workshopped scenes from her award-winning film, CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME, which went on to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

On the auspicious night of June 24, 2011, the film played at the Rooftop Film Festival in New York City. When Madeleine took the stage for the Q&A session following the film, she announced to the audience that Gay Marriage Equality had just been passed in New York State.

To celebrate Pride of the Ocean’s 10th anniversary and its longstanding tradition of being an incubator for new films, Madeleine returns to Pride of the Ocean for a reunion screening of the full CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME film. Always a crowd pleaser, you won’t want to miss the fun on Pride of the Ocean’s 10th anniversary cruise March 4-12, 2017.

Be The First…

LetterToAnitaScreeningDear Friends, AndreaAs many of you may already know, our dear friend Andrea Meyerson is currently in post production on her latest documentary, CLAMBAKE. Andrea screened a work in progress unfinished rough cut of CLAMBAKE on Pride of the Ocean’s Western Caribbean Cruise this past March. The film offers an insightful, exciting, and humorous look into the 30-year history of Women’s Week in Provincetown, one of the largest lesbian destinations in the world. We have just found out that the film has been accepted into the prestigious Provincetown International Film Festival where it will have its world premiere! The festival takes place June 17-21, 2015. She is working diligently to complete it by the festival’s deadline, which is quickly approaching. woarheader Can’t make it to Provincetown in June? Would you like to support Andrea and her new film? How about Alaska in August? Andrea has graciously agreed to screen the finished CLAMBAKE film on Pride of the Ocean’s Alaska Cruise in August. Alaska has been Pride of the Ocean’s most popular destination to date, with many of Andrea’s WOMEN ON A ROLL members supporting her on the cruise. Andrea will also be joined by comedian Jennie McNulty, who not only appears in the film, but who will be giving an exclusive performance for Pride of the Ocean. As Andrea agrees, this is a tough road — making documentaries about our LGBTQ history and culture, but we feel it’s extremely important to document, preserve and share our important journey. It’s a blessing and a curse — but someone has to do it to ensure our rich LGBT history does not get lost or forgotten, and that generations to come will have a greater understanding and appreciation of the individuals and events that paved the way for them. Pride of the Ocean Lives Out Loud

Adding to the Sports and International programs of Pride of the Ocean’s Western Caribbean cruise is our Live Out Loud program, which tells a tapestry of stories, both documentary and fiction, both gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered, of people making the choice to live life to its fullest, sometimes under adverse circumstances.

Leading off the program is a delightful short film where a surprise visit, a bumbling bestie, and many years of tight-lipped deception cause EVERYONE’S ish to hit the fan. The chaos caused in this comedy of errors is full of sexy moments and tons of laughter. Secrets and Toys will warm your heart as you root for the lovers to make it through the storm.
DalilaAliRajah-SecretsAndToys_640x360ii
Starring Dalila Ali Rajah (Cherry Bomb, Grey’s Anatomy, New Girl), Shelli Boone (Saints and Sinners, Entourage), Diane Sellers (Rules of Engagement, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc, Hot Guys with Guns), Doug Spearman (Noah’s Arc, Old Dogs & New Tricks), Jill Bennett (Second Shot, Dante’s Cove), Marc Samuel (General Hospital, Hot Guys with Guns), and Jason Stuart (Big Gay Love, Coffee Date).

CynthiaLubow-MaculineAndPregnant_640x360i

In Cynthia Lubow’s latest film, Masculine and Pregnant: Transcending Gender, a diverse group of masculine-of-center identified people speak to their experiences of gender expression, gender identity, attractions, parents, partners, pregnancy, breastfeeding, conflicts, parenting and hopes for the future through the lens of carrying a baby in their bodies. The film seeks to confront many assumptions about gender that limit understanding of gender, such as the assumption that there are only two genders, that only men have facial hair, that non-binary gender implies anything about sexual preference, that gender is static, that body shape determines gender, and that male identity and pregnancy are incompatible or incomprehensible.

MichelleWood_AndCounting_640x360

“What would you do if you expected to die?”, Michelle Wood asks us. Taking you on a sensory odyssey, “AND COUNTING” invites you to hear and visualize one man’s journey of living longer than he ever imagined possible with HIV.

We’d love to have you join us for Pride of the Ocean’s Live Out Loud program, and while on-line registration for this cruise has ended, cabins may still be available.

For available options, please call Geisha Cumberbatch at (703) 389-4617, or email Geisha at g.cumberbatch@cruiseone.com.

Jared Leto? On Pride of the Ocean, Transgender People Represent Themselves On and Off the Screen

EwanDuarteFilmStripVertical

Ewan Duarte

Recently, Jared Leto was awarded the Oscar for his portrayal of the transgender character Rayon in the film, “Dallas Buyers Club”. While some felt that the character was a positive portrayal of a transgender hero, others felt that the portrayal was stereotypical and didn’t accurately represent the diversity found within the transgender community. Pride of the Ocean prides itself on selecting independent, original, and authentic personal stories by and about the LGBT community.

One such story that Pride of the Ocean has been closely following is that of Ewan Duarte, whose personal journey began with his 2010 documentary short, “Spiral Transition” about the filmmaker’s relationship with his mother and how it changes and evolves as he transitions genders.

Spiral-Transition-Film-frame

“Spiral Transition” Film Still

Ewan’s journey continues in his Master of Fine Arts thesis film, “Change Over Time”, an animated, experimental, personal documentary about the filmmaker’s first year on testosterone, told from an impressionistic and poetic perspective.

Moving into its 5th year, Pride of the Ocean proudly continues its history as a film festival that showcases transgender films and invites filmmakers; however, the one transgender voice that has been missing from Pride of the Ocean has been that of the transgender audience, so if you know a transgender person or are a transgender person yourself, we encourage you to consider joining Ewan and other transgender filmmakers in the safe inclusive space that we have created on Pride of the Ocean by clicking here or on the button below.ClickToLearnMoreButton

Coming Out: A Revolutionary Act

While gays and lesbians in the large LGBT capitals of the world often see coming out as easy and sometimes not even necessary, the recent headlines in the news tell another story. For many people, coming out can be terrifying, dangerous, and even life threatening.Coming Out Michael Gorlick
Michael Gorlick, a graduate of Western University’s Media Program, came out to his friends and family on social media, using YouTube and hidden cameras to record the experience as part of his documentary film, while driving cross country from Vancouver to Toronto. Along the way, he shares his thoughts and feelings about coming out when he gets home and how/if he will be able to do so. He reflects on how things will change, if they even will, and his feelings of fear and hope.

In the film, “After Stonewall” Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, remarked,

The most important thing I believe that gays and lesbians have done to change the world is to come out of the closet…that revolutionary act, for me, is the most important thing we’ve done in 30 years.

“Coming Out: A Revolutionary Act in the 21st Century” will have an exclusive screening on Pride of the Ocean’s cruise departing New York on June 1, 2014 in honor of the 45th Anniversary of Stonewall.

You can be one of the first people to see the film and to meet Michael in person, when you book your cabin on Pride of the Ocean. But Pride of the Ocean is much more than films. Click here to see all the cocktail parties, group dinners, live entertainment, and group excursions that are already lined up for the festival cruise.
