Meet Me on Board Meets Pride of the Ocean

There must be other LGBT folks on this cruise…I wish I could meet them…

Randall Shirley is an award winning travel journalist and editor for Meet Me on Board, a unique website that allows LGBT travelers to connect with each other and travel in good company. He believes cruise travel represents an exceptional vacation value, and loves it because it essentially forces him to disconnect and offers time to relax, read a book,
or view films!

Randall Shirley

Randall and his husband Denni were married last year, and took a honeymoon to Alaska, returning to their home in the Vancouver area by cruise ship. Randall is a dual-citizen of Canada and the United States, and looks forward to once experiencing the coastline of these two countries with guests of Pride of the Ocean. Both Randall and Denni are film fans, with Randall leaning to Hollywood action and Denni preferring independent films.

“Inside Film Distribution” with Kelly Burkhardt, former TLA Releasing Vice President

“One of the toughest challenges in independent film is figuring out the best way to get a film out into the world. Simply making a movie and playing a couple of festivals is not enough anymore. Learn firsthand about the inner workings of film distribution aboard Pride of the Ocean 2013, from someone who’s been in the trenches as a distributor and a filmmaker.”

Kelly A. Burkhardt

Former VP, Operations for global indie film distribution company TLA Releasing, Kelly Burkhardt has dedicated the last twelve years of her career distributing notable and provocative LGBT films. Throughout her successful tenure at TLA Releasing, Kelly had a key roll in bringing groundbreaking features such as Gregg Araki’s award-winning film Mysterious Skin, Latter Days and Another Gay Movie to the mainstream marketplace. Ms. Burkhardt has been a film festival programmer for Philadelphia Qfest for the past 10 years.

Kelly prides herself first and foremost on being a creative artist and filmmaker. She wrote/directed/produced her first short film Tremble & Spark, produced the award-winning short Regrets and recently co-produced Darren Stein’s G.B.F., which is hitting the festival circuit this year.

Say “I Do!” to Gay Marriage and Pride of the Ocean in 2013

After winning awards in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Long Beach, and Seattle, the home of Three Dollar Bill Cinema and port of departure for Pride of the Ocean 2013, the film “I DO” will be screened aboard Pride of the Ocean’s 2013 cruise, setting sail from Seattle to Alaska on August 18 – 25, 2013.

I do

Jack (David W Ross QUINCEANERA, BAD BOYS INC) is a British gay man working as an assistant photographer in the New York fashion industry. When his brother (Grant Bowler, TRUE BLOOD, UGLY BETTY, and the upcoming LIZ & DICK) gets killed in a brutal car crash, Jack is left to raise his brother’s daughter, Tara (Jessica Brown, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3), with his sister-in-law Mya (Alicia Witt, MR. HOLLAND’S OPUS, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS).

Stepping right into the middle of the marriage equality debate, I DO is the deeply affecting story about a man forced – by discrimination – to make an impossible choice. Produced by Stephen Israel (SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, BOY CULTURE) and starring David W Ross (QUINCEANERA), who also produced and who wrote the beautifully calibrated screenplay, and directed by Glenn Gaylord (writer/producer of LEAVE IT ON THE FLOOR), this independent feature film couldn’t be more timely.

Yet while both sides of the issue passionately state their cases, what’s left in the balance are families and couples often split apart, especially those with bi-national makeups. Immigration, which most heterosexual couples take for granted as a given, complicates same-sex relationships, even in states where marriage is now legal.

Our Fourth Cruise Picks up Steam!

White Pass

While the White Pass Railroad train we are taking up the mountain (3000 feet in 20 minutes) when we dock in Skagway is now pulled by a diesel engine, you will feel like you have been transported back in time and literally into the Alaskan untamed wilderness when you join us this summer on this special shore excursion.  We will be in the wild together and it looks pretty much the same as when folks first climbed the mountain to White Pass back in the 1880’s.

We have rented our own railroad car for this excursion to be used by our Pride of the Ocean group.   At $119 per person, you won’t want to miss out on this special shore excursion offer.

Please sign up with Geisha Cumberbatch at g.cumberbatch@cruiseone.com or 866-432-0050.  We have limited seats, so climb on board our railroad car to White Pass.

Pride of the Ocean throws the holiday bash for Women On A Roll

Our Program Director, John Scagliotti, gets into the swing of things on his way to the Hollywood WOAR Party.

The mistletoe was out this past weekend in Hollywood as Pride of the Ocean’s Cruise Director, Jim Pollin, and Program Director, John Scagliotti sponsored the Holiday Party for the Women On A Roll.   And we are delighted that so many Women on A Roll will be joining us on our next film festival cruise.  What a great group they are! Great dancers and the caterer of the party is coming too! She has heard about the great food on the ship.

We’ll be honoring the founder of WOAR, Andrea Meyerson, as our recipient of the Body of Work recognition.   And you can see some of that body in our new festival video which we premiered at the LA LGBT Center’s Renberg Theater.  It stars Casper Andreas (GOING DOWN IN LA LA LAND), Sebastian La Cause (HUSTLING Series) and the very talented Emmy-winner, Mark Payne.  The show in LA was closed out with a special appearance of Liza Minelli.  Only in LA does it get this wild and to think it is coming on board the Norwegian Pearl soon.  Click here http://vimeo.com/54798831  to view (you’ll need to write the password: norwegianpearl

The Pride of the Ocean folks take a pose with Liza Minelli.

All Aboard the Pride of the Ocean Express!!

John’s Test Drive reports for our next Alaska Film Festival Cruise

John with conductor on the White Pass Railroad.

With 110 shore excursions to pick from in four different ports on our next cruise, I was in a bit of a panic trying to choose the best one for our group to experience as a group.  On each cruise we try to organize at least one shore-based group activity for our Pride of the Ocean Passengers to do while we are in port. (We deliberately plan the film festival not to interfere with the any shore excursions so don’t worry that you’ll miss one of the great films we’ll be showing.  You won’t.) I tried a few different excursions in different ports and they are all pretty much amazing.  There are a few silly ones, of course,  like watching lumberjacks jumping from log to log in a river.  It’s kind of hot—if you go for that sort of thing.  But Alaska is really about the wild, natural scenery and as much as I like looking at lumberjacks, the Alaskan mountains seemed to beckon to me.  As film lovers, we appreciate a good shot and good shots you will get from our very own railroad car. Pride of the Ocean has chartered an entire train car for our group on the White Pass Railway. What a trip this is going to be. The train actually comes to the ship at our stop in Skagway where it’s all aboard.  Then it climbs to almost 3,000 feet  to the summit of White Pass in just 20 miles. The dizzying grades reach 3.9% at times.  I took about a million pictures because everywhere I looked was one of those Kodak moments.  The railroad was built through White Pass in 1898 for the Gold Rush.  But thank goodness they saved it just for us.

And the railroad car we will rent seems to be as old as the hills but quite comfortable… with a pot belly stove and cushioned seats. You are going to love this, believe me.

So  for those coming with us on the Norwegian Pearl to Alaska for our fourth cruise, please join us on this scenic extravaganza.  Hey, when we say a film festival that caters to ALL your senses, we really mean it!
Below are a few of shots from the train. (They let you stand between cars so you can get some of these). Scary but worth the effort.  I felt like I was doing a National Geographic shoot.  Mr. Butch Camera man, moi, was leaning over the edge to get that perfect shot while some cute guy kept me from falling off the side of the mountain. But, that’s another story I’ll save for another time—perhaps in the Bliss Lounge on the ship after you buy me drink.

Second “Body of Work” honoree chosen: Andrea Meyerson!

Pride of the Ocean has chosen Andrea Meyerson for its 2013 Body of Work recipient. With over 25 documentaries and comedy specials to her credit, one of her films will be screened at the next festival, which sets sail from Seattle to Alaska in August 2013.

Join Andrea Meyerson for the next Pride of the Ocean cruise!

In congratulating Meyerson for her many years of powerful and hilarious films Pride of the Ocean festival programmer John Scagliotti applauded her “creative cinematic approach in presenting the many faces of the LGBT community.”

Scagliotti says, “Whether smartly exploring our complicated lives in comedy with your Laughing Matters films or your emphasis on capturing the magical details of a powerful human story in I Stand Corrected, it all adds up to a style full of grace and love for your subjects.”

Meyerson is well known for her four documentaries in the Laughing Matters series—Laughing Matters, Laughing Matters…More, Laughing Matters…The Men and Laughing Matters…Next Gen. In recent years she has also done many comedy specials for Showtime Networks and LOGO, including a documentary on comedienne Kate Clinton.

Her current documentary, I Stand Corrected is a departure from her focus on stand-up comedians. In this stirring film, Meyerson showcases the life and trials of Jennifer Leitham, a transgender upright bass player. It screened on Pride of the Ocean, where it won critical acclaim before picking up the Audience Award at OutFest in July. Since then, it has been receiving high praise and is slotted in many LGBT film festivals around the country.

The 1st Body of Work award went to Casper Andreas, the director of popular gay narrative films Going Down in La-La Land, Between Love & Goodbye, The Big Gay Musical, Violet Tendencies and A Four Letter Word.

Pride of the Ocean has invited Andrea to present one of her films on the next Pride of the Ocean cruise.

(#1) from John on Alaska Cruise Site Visit

You must stay a day or two in Seattle

I am so glad I got a chance to spend some time in Seattle (our next embarkation city)  before heading off to my site visit on the Norwegian Pearl’s Alaska Cruise.  Michael Bradbury, the Pride of the Ocean Marketing guy, is from Seattle and gave me a little tour of the environs.  I am staying on Capitol Hill, which I am told is the “gay neighborhood,”  though I understand that there is no capitol on the hill. (go figure.)  Seattle seems to be very gay indeed. When doing my doc BEFORE STONEWALL we did an interview in Pioneer Square at a very old gay bar, the Double Header, which has been operating since 1934.  No, I was not the first patron!

Seattle was a major port city during World War II where many of those sailors and lady waves settled after getting back from the Pacific theater. So Seattle got a big leap on the rest of us and I believe, where the phrase, “Hey Sailor” was first used.

One of my first stops was Kerry Park.  This is the must go place to take that great picture with the Seattle skyline and the Space Needle in the background.  It is also where a lot of wedding pictures get shot.

Fabulous view to be had at Kerry Park

John with four bridesmaids, one more lovely than the other.

the bride checks out John’s threads

While straight folks can enjoy Kerry Park for their wedding photos, it seems gay folks are in a big fight here to have that opportunity… There are folks in Washington State that are trying to stop LGBT people from having the same rights as they have.  We’ve seen this before but maybe Washington will become the first state to adopt gay marriage by popular vote this fall when Referendum 74 passes. http://washingtonunitedformarriage.org/

Maybe we can help the folks in Seattle win this one!  You can donate to their campaign here…https://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50436/p/salsa/web/common/public/content?content_item_KEY=10090&track=home_bigbutton and perhaps by the time we all get to Seattle next August, we will see some gay wedding pictures at Kerry Park.

Next up:  my trip on the Washington Ferries…
